The Maharashtra chapter of ISG was formed in April 2004. Dr. B. D. Pimparkar was the founder president and Dr. Prabha Sawant was the founder secretary. It was then called as MAHAISG and now termed as Maharashtra chapter of ISG. The chapter had its first meting in 2005 at Mumbai. Thereafter annual meetings are being held across the state with great enthusiasm and scientific content.

The chapter kept on growing steadily and as of today, it has more than 450 life members which includes a fraternity of Gastroenterologist, GI surgeons,GI physicians, Hepatologists. We also have some pathologists and radiologists as associate members thus covering all broad specialities which a Gastroenterologist requires.

We have established a tradition of giving life time achievement awards in the annual chapter conference to three distinguished members who have contributed immensely to the field of Gastroenterology in the state of Maharashtra. Some of the members who have received this award include Dr. Pimparkar, Dr. Mrs Nanivadekar,Dr Prakash Joshi, Dr. Sharad ShahDr. Philip Abraham, Dr. Amit Maydeo, Dr. Prabha Sawant, Dr. Shobhna Bhatia, Dr.Shreekant Mukkewar just to name a few.

The chapter is proud to have Padmashree awardee like Dr. Amit Maydeo, past editors of IJG like Dr. Philip Abraham and Dr. Shobhna Bhatia as its members. We also had representations in ISG Governing council.

We greatly miss Dr. B. D. Pimparkar, Dr. H. G. Desai and Dr. Deepak Amrapurkar and would always remember their great contribution to the field of Gastroenterology. The Maharashtra chapter has held four successful ISGCONs so far viz. in the years 2006, 2014, 2020 and 2022.

We are in a process of developing website of the chapter and it will be launched soon. The chapter is more like a closely knit family. The office bearers are elected unanimously, unopposed in the GBM as per the tenure. Long live Maharashtra chapter of ISG!!!
